    #CSForAll Initiative

One of my greatest accomplishments to date has been working for 4+ years on the #CSForAll Task Force under Fmr. President Barack Obama and Fmr. VP Joe Biden's ground-breaking initiative.

Moving into 2020, I continue to participate in the #CSForAll program on the state and local level

#CSForAll: VP Biden learning about #coding.

Released: September 4, 2020 Almost 5 years ago, I sought to expand upon my #GirlsInSTEM articles on HuffPost. I realized how important -- indispensable even-- having a computer, tablet & working knowledge of technology was for school-aged kids. I also saw first-hand how the information gap widened between students who had that access and technology & those who did not.

4+ years ago, I was blessed to be able to work on the #CSForAll Initiative, under Fmr. President Barack Obama & VP Joe Biden. Many thought the goal of ensuring kids had technology & coding in their wheelhouse to be over-achieving or unrealistic. As #STEM and #clinicaltrials has expanded over the years, and as #COVID19 has mandated that millions of students commit to #virtuallearning, I am so happy that the work we continue to do matters.

Now more than ever, it's important that every child have access to the internet & have the skillset and tools needed to harness the power through coding & more. . . Regardless of where they live or the economic status of their families.

I can't wait to see where this work will bring us-- together.

  • Mentorship Matters

I have had the opportunity to mentor over 200 people in the area of #STEM, which included over 50 students.

    May 12, 2022:

In 2013, I was approached by an 11-year old girl, Haley Taylor Schlitz, after she read my articles on HuffPost #GirlsInSTEM and said I inspired her to pursue her dreams in the Science realm. https://www.huffpost.com/author/yourglamazon-431

The famous Disney character #docmcstuffins is named after her ER doc mom, Dr. Myeshia Taylor and I struggled to understand how I could add to her life— she had everything she needed at home—including a supportive dad and gifted brother and sister.

Then I got to know her personally. Her tenacity, her chutzpah, her heart, her goals and her persistent drive to do what is right above all-else. It only made sense that when she graduated from College at age 16, she would go on to be accepted to 9 law schools before she knew how to drive.

I am a proud friend, supporter and mentor to Haley and I’m ecstatic to announce her upcoming graduation from SMU Law School at age 19. She becomes the youngest Black person in the US to ever graduate from law school and SMU Law's youngest graduate. All thanks to her own hard work and support of her parents and family. I can only pray that one day my children follow their own dreams like Haley has followed hers. I am so proud

March 2019: My Mentee Haley Taylor Schlitz Accepted to 9 Law Schools at Age 16: Good Morning America Spot

On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, my mentee, 16 year old Haley Taylor Schlitz, was featured on #GoodMorningAmerica at 7 am CST! She talked about being 16 and accepted into NINE law schools. Read more below...

9 years ago I was asked to write a full-time column for @huffpost for #GirlsInSTEM. Instead of turning the offer down completely as I focused on my career in oncology research and my own brand, I decided to write a few articles for the #HuffPost on a part-time basis. I began to be contacted by all kinds of people—women, men and children who either had an interest in #STEM, a child with gifts in that area or adults wanting a career change. One young lady stood out: 11 year old Haley— a bright little shining star. She played the harp and was naturally talented in math & science: she wanted to go to medical school like her ER doctor mom, who the TV series #DocMcStuffins is named after. . .

Well, I became her 1:1 mentor. More like her fact-checker, essay reviewer, life coach 😊😂. I’m so thrilled to announce that she has been accepted to NINE law schools at age 16– all thanks to her parents, who so lovingly pour into her and her brother & sister.

Unbeknownst to me, Haley’s other mentor is Mrs. Peaches Golding, OBE, Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of the County and City of Bristol, UK! I am in excellent company.

  • All Roads Lead to the South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Math!

    broken image
    broken image

It was a pleasure and honor to travel to the beautiful state of South Carolina in March 2018 as the Women’s Month Speaker for the esteemed South Carolina Governor’s School of Science and Mathematics! This was major!

As soon as I stepped foot in Hartsville, SC and had a brief tour of Coker College and downtown, I knew I had landed in a special place. What I did not know was how talented, humble and generous the students and faculty of GSSM would be. I spent hours speaking with the students in their AP courses, the lecturers and administrators in their offices and even board members. The peak of my visit came when I had the opportunity to speak directly to the students during my speech. My own mentor, my mom, was present for my speech, which meant the world to me. I believe I was able to encourage the juniors and seniors on their path.

I even had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with almost 30 students- we prayed together, talked about their futures and came up with a “game plan” for each to move forward into the next phase of their lives with confidence.

I would like to thank GSSM, my own mentor of 25 years Dr. Hector Flores, President of GSSM, the Board and faculty, the SC Governor’s office, Dr. Mobley, the ingenious students, the City of Hartsville, Chamber of Commerce (Hartsville) and the state of South Carolina. I cannot wait to be back!

God bless and keep each of you,

    Kimberly

About Kimberly & Her S.T.E.M Journey

As a Clinical Trial Manager at a major pharma company and Scientist, Kimberly Kiel has worked in the Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical industry for over 15 years.

She strives to support, motivate and encourage young students, especially
girls and under-represented minorities, who are interested in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) fields. She has worked at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer) as a Clinical Scientist, Merck as a Scientist and has traveled domestically and internationally while monitoring clinical trials, specifically for compounds to treat infectious diseases and various cancers.

At age 15, Ms. Kiel attended the Texas Governor's Honors Program and was then accepted into the Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities- one of two residential programs for gifted and talented high school students recognized by the Texas State Legislature.

Students complete their last two years of high school and their first two years of college coursework while living full-time on a college campus.

At age 16, Ms. Kiel became the youngest Fellow at Penn State University's College of Biotechnlogy under the direction of Dr. Hector E. Flores.

Kiel studied HPLC extraction, gel electrophoresis, TLC, RNA isolation

and Peruvian/andean tubers and their link to ovarian cancer through a grant funded by the McKnight Association & NIH. Her research work on aphids and large scale crop changes was used in the publication “Root herbivory in vitro: Interactions between roots and aphids grown in aseptic coculture:”

In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology - Plant; Volume 35, Issue 3 , pp 259-264

After graduating from the Texas Academy of Leadership in Humanities, she matriculated into Penn State University and studied Biology & Biochemistry. Since graduating from The Pennsylvania State University in 2002, she has worked within the Research and Development arenas throughout the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.

    Current therapeutic areas:

Kimberly now manages global oncology clinical trials for patients who have breast cancer, gastric cancer, renal cell cancer, non-small cell cancer and many others.

She manages an international team of 20+ employees who are responsible for ensuring that pivotal clinical trials are conducted in accordance with ICH-GCP and that the cleanest data is retrieved. She is proud to have spearheaded many first-in-human oncology trials which have led to some of the most groundbreaking FDA-approved drugs/biologics for cancer. Previously, Kimberly was the most senior colleague researching small-cell Renal Cell Cancer at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Cleveland Clinic and also studied 2 biologicals for the treatment of Breast Cancer (Both Phase I studies). She currently manages several clinical trials in the therapeutic areas of oncology (Prostate) and immunotherapy.

In 2013, Kiel was invited to become a mentor and blogger for The Huffington Post's

"Girls in S.T.E.M." initiative. She intermittently acts as both a contributor to the website as well as a mentor to two medical students and several middle-school and high-school aged students interested in S.T.E.M.

In 2018, Kiel was chosen as a Mentor for The Houston Business Journal's #BizMentoringMonday event. This was ground-breaking because over 50 women specifically chose to be mentored during the event by Kimberly.

Aside from her life-long love of science, Kimberly attributes her success to her faith in God, supportive parents, a self-less mother, strong teacher/faculty mentors and tons of lipgloss. She is a motivational speaker, creates and collaborates on S.T.E.M. curriculum, is a 20-year violinist and plays at Golf.

  • Kiel Recognized as "Women Who Mean Business" (Health Care) in 2017 by The Houston Business Journal

    broken image

    September 14, 2017

I am humbled to be among 70 women in Houston, TX chosen as an honoree for this prestigious Houston Business Journal #HBJ award: "Women Who Mean Business."

As a woman and specifically a woman of color, I know of the numerous challenges we face head-on in the business world (and for me, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry).

At an early age, I witnessed my mother, Betty Kiel, run several businesses and work within the oil and gas industry and municipal government. She was not only the brains behind "Letter Perfect Secretarial Service," "The Educational Warehouse-- Educating the Whole Man," "Betty Kiel Consulting" and now "Sevenfold747," but she was also the janitor, the financier, the CEO and the prayer-leader. She always taught me and my two brothers that success comes from faith in God, hard work and determination. Science has always been my passion, but recently, my career has been focused on managing global early-phase oncology trials. Giving back to others and mentoring #STEM students has allowed me the opportunity to reach back and encourage the next generation.

As a Texas Governor's Honors Program attendee, graduate of the Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities and 16-year old fellow at The Pennsylvania State University through the National Science Foundation, my research in clinical trials and first-in-human projects has been exciting and ground-breaking.

As a Shell Oil Company Alumni, Penn State University Alumna, 2016 Houston Business Journal 40 Under 40 Winner, Vanguard STEM Mentor, Rube Goldberg Award Winner, Macy's Scholar, Lifetime Member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, honoree of Engineers Changing the Conversation and contributor for Women 2.0 and The Huffington Post, I use each opportunity given to me to acknowledge the people who contributed to my projects and their success. Each mentor I've had has made an indelible mark on my life. As a 25+ yr violinist, songwriter and All-City winner, I have had opportunities to share my talents with the world.

I am from Port Arthur, Texas. I have traveled the world far and wide and I believe in the power of God, the power of prayer and that God's mercies are new every morning. I believe that when you are presented with an opportunity- not only should you grab it by the horns and give it your best, but never forget to come back and say "Thank you." Eventually, those glass ceilings will be shattered. And until then, it's up to me-- and women who have also "heard the call" --to take the initiative and crack it wide open.

    Faith Without Works is DEAD.

  • My Testimony

How my Faith Shapes My Life: In My Own Words

    The Vision

"And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry." -Habakkuk 2:2-3 (KJV)

    The Mantra

I give God the glory for every lesson, promise and reward in my life. My mother raised me and my brothers as Southern Baptists but told each of us to ensure that we had a "personal relationship" with God. She encouraged us to pray to God as if He was our best friend-- and along this journey, He has proven to be a provider, a father, a friend and a Savior all wrapped up into one.

For those whose faith is similar, I encourage you to have just a mustard seed's worth of faith- God will do the rest!!! I pray that God pricks your heart and blesses your going out and coming in- TRUST GOD <3
